Introduction
Marika Orenius is a fine artist, researcher and lecturer of art pedagogy at the Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts Helsinki. She also works at the Open Campus on university pedagogy in the arts and teacher education. In her work, artistic practice, research and teaching are closely intertwined.
Orenius’s research and pedagogical work focus on artist pedagogy, artistic thinking, and how a fine artist’s relationship with the world takes shape through artistic and pedagogical practice for example, in an exhibition context. She is particularly interested in encounter, observation, experience and agency, as well as in how artistic practice can open up new ways of understanding oneself, other people and the surrounding world. In her teaching, she emphasises a research-based approach, the artist’s own thinking, and the continuous reflection on and development of teaching practice.
Orenius was awarded a Doctor of Arts degree from Aalto University in 2019. Her artistic practice encompasses video, photography, drawing, performance and installation. In her artistic work, she explores themes such as presence, community, power relations, and social and ecological tensions. Her work has been exhibited in Finland and internationally, including in Venice and Stockholm, and at Arktikum in Rovaniemi. She is currently researching artist pedagogy and artistic thinking as part of visual artists’ education and artistic research.
